  3. We at Altsys are proud to announce the availability of Fontographer
  4. 3.2, the first Macintosh PostScript font program that can produce
  5. fonts for the ATM (Adobe Type Manager) Windows environment on MS-DOS
  6. computers.
  7.  
  8. Accompanying this README.TXT file is the BlackChancery font. It is
  9. fully compatible with ATM for Windows, allowing it to be seen on
  10. screen at any size, and print to any printer that has a Windows
  11. driver.
  12.  
  13. INSTALLING THE BLACKCHANCERY FONT:
  14.  
  15. 1. Copy the BLACKCHA.PFB file to your \PSFONTS directory.
  16.  
  17. 2. Copy the BLACKCHA.PFM file to your \PSFONTS\PFM directory. (You can
  18. ignore the .AFM file since it is not useful with Windows. It may be
  19. useful to people running GEM applications, however.)
  20.  
  21. 3. Open the ATM Control Panel and "Add..." BlackChancery to your list
  22. of ATM fonts. You will have to open the \PSFONTS\PFM directory to
  23. allow ATM to see your BlackChancery font.
  24.  
  25. 4. If you have a PostScript printer, the following will be necessary.
  26. If your printer does not have PostScript, ignore this step. Open your
  27. WIN.INI file with the Windows Notepad program. (Do you have a backup
  28. of it? If not, make one now.) At the end of the "softfonts" list, you
  29. will see something like:

  31. softfonts5=c:\psfonts\pfm\BLACKCHA.PFM
  32.  
  33. You'll need to change this to:
  34.  
  35. softfonts5=c:\psfonts\pfm\BLACKCHA.PFM,c:\psfonts\BLACKCHA.PFB
  36.  
  37. Doing this allows the Windows PostScript driver to find your .PFB file
  38. and download it to your PostScript printer. DO NOT use a semicolon
  39. between the two entries or you will cause some rather unpleasant
  40. problems.

  42. You should now exit Windows and restart. BlackChancery will now show
  43. up in your Windows programs' font menus and you'll be able to choose
  44. it and use it like any other font. ATM will allow you to see the font
  45. in all sizes and print it smoothly at all sizes.

  48. INFORMATION ABOUT FONTOGRAPHER 3.2:
  49.  
  50. Fontographer 3.2 runs only on Macintosh computers. The basic Macintosh
  51. Classic that retails for $999.00 (street price: c. $850.00) is ALL you
  52. need to make Fontographer 3.2 give you PC fonts for ATM in Windows.
  53. The Classic has a 1.44Mb floppy drive that can accommodate a System,
  54. Fontographer, and a font or two. Apple includes a System program with
  55. the Classic called Apple File Exchange. AFE can format a PC floppy and
  56. allow you to copy files from the Macintosh directly to the PC floppy
  57. [31/2", of course]. Fontographer 3.2 retails for $495.00 and is
  58. available from all reputable dealers of Macintosh software.

  60. To make fonts for Windows with ATM from Fontographer 3.2 you can do
  61. the following:
  62.  
  63. 1. Draw the font or autotrace it from scanned images pasted into
  64. Fontographer 3.2's Edit window. If you have already made Fontographer
  65. fonts, you can use the "Open font..." dialog from the File menu to
  66. open the font and allow its conversion to PC format. If you have PC
  67. PostScript fonts you wish to modify, you can download them to any
  68. Adobe PostScript printer that can simultaneously communicate with both
  69. Macintoshes and PC's, then use Altsys' Metamorphosis (retail $149.00)
  70. to convert the fonts to Fontographer format on the Macintosh.

  72. 2. Select all the characters in the font and use the Path menu's
  73. "Correct path direction" item to make sure that the path directions in
  74. the font are correct.
  75.  
  76. 3. While all the characters are still selected, use the Edit menu's
  77. "Char info..." item to make sure that all the characters in the font
  78. are filled with "Normal" fill and a "Tint" of 100% (DO NOT check the
  79. "Stroke" checkbox, since Adobe rules do not allow stroked characters
  80. in Type 1 fonts).

  82. 4. Use the Edit menu's "Font attributes..." dialog to turn on the
  83. "Automatic PostScript and bitmap hints", "Generate Type 1 fonts", and
  84. "Adobe standard character encoding" checkboxes. Do not turn on the
  85. "Use Flex feature if possible" checkbox unless you are absolutely
  86. certain that your font can benefit from Flex.

  88. 5. Use the File menu's "Generate fonts..." dialog and choose the
  89. "PostScript-PC" item from the "Outline format:" popup menu. To save
  90. time, you can choose the "None" item from the "Bitmap format:" popup
  91. menu, since you will not need to generate any kind of bitmap file. OK
  92. this dialog and the result will be the .AFM, .PFB, and .PFM files
  93. described above.

  95. 6. Start Apple File Exchange and format an MS-DOS floppy (Erase disk
  96. from the File menu). Use the left hand file dialog to find your .PFB
  97. and .PFM files. Select them and press the Translate button. AFE will
  98. use its default file translation (basically no changes except external
  99. file format). Eject the floppy from the Macintosh using the Eject
  100. button and bring it to your 3-1/2" disk-equipped MS-DOS machine.
  101. Insert the floppy and follow the above directions for installing the
  102. font.
